Martin Williamson 1883 - 1915 ...

Until last weekend I knew so little about this Great Uncle of mine.

He was one of the nine million soldiers who lost their lives in World War One.

Second eldest son of John Williamson and Caroline Jane Edwards and older brother of my Grand Mother Eliza Mary Williamson.

From the small town of Harrington, Cumberland, England.

War Records show he died in Flanders,France on the 16th of April 1915 along with others from the 2nd Battalion Border Regiment.

Like so many other young men who gave their lives in that awful war he had no wife and children to leave behind.

I am thankful for a new 2nd cousin in England who had this picture of him and two other Brothers to share with me.

So happy to be able to pause and remember Martin to see his face and honor his sacrifice.

Enid Mary Blyton born 1897 ...

enid-blyton 2 Enid was born in London and was the author of 800 books which were translated into 90 languages the 5th most translated author ever, just behind Shakespeare.

I was so happy this morning when I came across information linking me to this wonderful creative writer of children's books.

I have mentioned in an earlier post that as a child, before the day's of TV and Computer's my favorite entertainment was visiting the Harris Museum and Art Gallery in Preston, Lancashire, England.

I would often check first in the Public Library section for books written by Enid Blyton.

I spent many hours reading about the "The Famous Five" or "The Secret Seven".

Little did I know at the time that Grace Williamson my second cousin 3x removed married Enid's cousin William Tomlinson.

About three years ago when I would babysit my Grandson Collin in the afternoon we would enjoy watching ...

So much information on the internet about Enid Blyton http://www.heathersblytonpages.com/blytonweblinks.html.

I checked amazon.com and saw a movie had been made in England about her starring Helene Bonham Carter...

MovieI wanted to order it along with her Biography and was so disappointed to learn that the DVD would not play on American DVD players.

I still have fun memories of reading her books...

Family History - Williamson

I know in past  Post's I have written about my Williamson ancestry.    I do so again because I want to leave a record  of information for my descendents.  My Mother's Mother was the first Williamson on my Family tree.  A Grandmother I never met because she passed away when my Mother was 5 years old.Birth Cert 1

ChurchRd5   This picture of Eliza Mary is from an early Postcard of Harrington. It was sent to me from a cousin in Australia.  Eliza Mary is the little girl standing with her Father John Williamson.  She has her back to the camera.  Looks about 3 or 4 years old. Probably taken around 1900.

I can remember when I was a child sitting with my Mother while she related the story to me about her Mother's death. Maybe it was this story that got me so interested in Family History.

Eliza Mary Williamson was born in Whitehaven, Cumberland, England in 1885. (Her Father was born in Harrington)  From Eliza back another nine generations to 1592  (292 years)  the Williamson's lived in Cumberland before that I have not been able to trace them.  With a name such as Williamson they could have come over the border from Scotland or even across the Irish Sea from Ireland.

What made it so easy to trace them back that far through Church and Census Records and Wills  is they  lived in two places for a long time  Ennerdale and Harrington.  Many of their descendents along the way did go to other places.  Australia and other towns in England.  My direct line goes right back from Whitehaven to Harrington to Ennerdale.

Eliza Mary married my Grandfather George Longrigg in Harrington in 1906.

Marr Cert 1

Together they had six children. Eliza passed away after giving birth to their sixth child a girl named after her in 1923.  My mother remembered being awakened in the middle of the night along with her other siblings where they were taken in to their Mother's room to see her and the new baby.  Her Mother was holding the baby and was lying in bed and looked as white as the sheets she lay on.   When the children awoke the next morning Eliza had passed.

My Grandfather was out of work at the time and left with six children one a new born he made a decision that I learned he came to regret the rest of his life.  He gave up the baby to a childless couple that could have been relatives.

Twelve years ago I was in England and had the opportunity to talk with this Aunt of mine.  She did not know until she became an adult that she had been adopted.  As a child she said she had a really nice Uncle that would visit her often.   She had no idea that this Uncle was really her Father.   She had a happy childhood her only regret was that she had sisters and a brother she did not get to know about until she was an adult.

Personally I have never visited either Harrington or Ennerdale.   I love the pictures, information and history I am able to find on the Internet about these places.  In some way it helps me feel connected to the Williamson's.  I know they were hardworking and industrious people.  Mariners, Shipbuilders, Iron Workers, Carpenters, Blacksmiths, Shoemakers, Farmers and  Coal Miners.

Cumbria's coat of Arms and Motto granted in 1974 translated means "I shall lift up mine eyes unto the hills" which was felt appropriate as the Lake District Fells can be seen from all part of this new County.

Meet Mary Ann....

Mary Ann Williamson is my 1st cousin three times removed. She is the Grand Daughter of my 3rd Great Grand Father Nicholas Williamson and his wife Mary Lowery. Nicholas was born in Ennerdale, Cumberland and moved to Harrington,Cumberland where his 6th child Thomas married a Margaret Wyllie and their 4th child Mary Ann married Robert Ellwood. Nicholas and Mary had 13 children, Thomas and Margaret had 10 children and Mary Ann and Robert had 8 children.

I think I had researched back as far as Nicholas and Mary when I came in contact with a wonderful man named Derek Ellwood (my 4th cousin once removed) Derek was the Grandson of Mary Ann and Robert through their youngest son and 8th child Nicholas. Not only did Derek pass on to me his research on the Ellwood Line he had also done many more years back of excellent research on my Williamson Line which he promptly and graciously gave to me. Along with that came this Family Photo of Mary Ann and Robert Ellwood's Family.

Going through my files and updating this week the photo resurfaced and I thought what a shame to store this fine looking family in a folder in a file cabinet, they deserve to see the light of day. So here they are, the paper copy Derek sent shows all the names and how they are linked. I spent a couple of hours yesterday taking off head shots of each person and added them in the right places on my Charts. It was worth it to put all the faces with what had previously only been names.

Hope you are all not too confused, it all makes perfect sense to me.

Harrington

Nicholas Williamson married Mary Lowery and together they had 13 children. by this time England was in the middle of the Industial Revolution. While Cumberland had been mostly an agricultural county the demand for coal from the coal fields there had led to an extensive development of the coal mining industry. There were many pits in the area several in and around Harrington. This led to the expansion of Harrington Harbour to ship the coal to Ireland and other destinations. A thriving shipbuilding industry developed that included Sail makers, and a large Ropery. Harrington Ships voyaged all over the world many meeting their fate in far away places. The Census Record show that many of Nicholas Williamson's decendents became Mariners, Ship Builders and part owners, Rope Makers as well as Blacksmiths. Lets not forget one or two opted for the Hospitality Business by running the local Pubs. The above pictures I hope will paint a little picture of what Harrington must have been like. My grandmother Eliza Mary Williamson is buried in St Mary's churchyard. Some of my Williamsons lived on Shore Hill. I like to think some are in the school pictures. Mostly I put those on there because I loved them. I know they helped buld those lovely ships. if you would like to see more pictures of Harrington go to http://www.harringtonhistorygroup.co.uk/ The Postcard picture of Church Road by Irving Graham shows my Great Grandfather John Williamson holding the hand of my Grandmother Eliza Mary. Looks like they had been shopping for a Fish Dinner. I first saw this picture when a Williamson decendent in Australia sent it to me. They did not know who they were. Hope my family members enjoy these posts.
