Auntie Carrie...

Caroline Jane Longrigg born in Harrington, Cumberland England 1910-1980.

Second daughter of John Longrigg and Eliza Mary Williamson.

I have such fond memories of Carrie, my mother's older sister, foremost memory of her was her laugh, I can not remember a time I was with with her where she wasn't smiling or laughing.

Here she is (on the right) with my mother and her daughter my cousin Margaret.

Later years - picture of her as a cook at the nursery school she worked at.

My mother would take my sister Ethel and I to visit her on many Sunday afternoons or she would come and visit us.  She lived in Bolton, a town about an hours bus ride from us.

One cute thing she and my mother would do was swap house ornaments.  She would tell my mother she liked something and thought it would look nice decorating her fireplace, it usually went home with her.  Then when we would visit  her we would come home with something of hers.

Her life was not an easy one, as a very young girl maybe a teenager still she was put in to domestic service in the homes of others.  A very common thing for girls at the time who were not well educated and from poor families. I believe she did that until the time of her marriage.  That is where she learned to be the great cook she was.  We always ate good at her house.

As a teenager my friends and I would take the bus to Bolton on Saturday night occasionally so we could go ballroom Dancing at the Palais.

Typical row houses in Lancashire, England

If we were too tired to ride the bus back home we were always welcome to stay overnight at Carrie's house.  We usually were awakened early by the sounds of the Salvation Army Band marching down the street and playing under the bedroom window.

She always sent us off with a good breakfast and a happy smile.  We miss you Carrie, thanks for the wonderful memories.

I will always remember you like this.  The Mother of my childhood.   Thanks for being such a caring, honest  person who taught her children "great values" in life.

Beautiful Roses....

I was out walking at 7am this morning and walked by a home that had lots of roses climbing over the fence, the aroma was lovely. Immediately after walking past my memories of My Aunt Sally's  cottage garden came to my mind.

When my older sister and I were very young our Aunt lived in a small village  in Lancashire, we lived a few miles away in a town on a street of row houses with no garden area.

In the summer we would often take the bus to visit her and would enjoy the sights and smells of the English Countryside.  She had lots of Roses in many colors and varieties and we gotrose arbor to help pick and arrange them in vase's in her house.Rose garden 2  I loved both of my Mothers' sisters they were very kind and good to us.  Sally was a great cook and would treat us very special when we were visiting. She also had a very fine soprano voice and would perform publicly.

A few years before her death Sally came to visit me here in Utah with my Mother.  She had never been on a plane before or out of England.  We had such a good time and so did she. I remember you Sally  and not just the roses.

Stepping Back

About a month before Christmas I received an email from a lady in Suffolk, England. She wrote that she had seen my Family Tree on Ancestry.com and recognized the name of a second cousin of mine (the son of my Grandfathers brother) The only thing I knew about him was his name. It seems as a young married woman with her husband and two daughters she had moved in across the street from him and his wife. They had a good relationship with them over the years and helped them as they got older as they had no children of their own. After they both passed away, Eric first and then his wife Gladys last, they left her with a large box of Photographs and Documents. She suggested that maybe I might be interested in having them. Wow!! maybe is right. My reply was an immediate YES! Since then Ingrid has become my new best friend and has been patiently scanning Photo's and documents to me. Unfortunately some of the Pic's were not known to Ingrid but I have been able to figure out some of them. Advice to all people who take pictures, please write the person and the year on the back of your Pictures. You may know who they are but years from now others will not. Today I will Post three Pictures. First one is of Frances Bray the wife of my Grand Uncle John Longrigg as a child dancing. I love this picture and then one of Annie Mary Bray her older Sister also dancing. The 3rd one is of the girls with their Mother Sarah Williamson Bray. She happens to be the eldest daughter of Martin Williamson my second Great Grand Father. Sarah was born in 1857 in Harrington, Cumberland England. The Census shows the Williamson's lived on the same Street as the Bray's and the Longrigg's. More to come I am becoming a regular Sherlock Holmes with my magnifying glass on this case. Such fun and so many thanks to Ingrid.
