We all have sixteen of them...

Sometimes ...

it takes lots of the above to locate them.  I am talking about 3rd Great Grandmothers.  Of my sixteen I have only found the names of eleven. They lived on earth the same time as one of my favorite Authors, Jane Austen.  Which conjures up many images in style, tradition and culture.  Artists have painted numerous pictures of the time period...

and of women in elegant Regency fashions...

Hard for me to imagine Elizabeth Hodgson the wife of Isaac Longrigg  1781- 1855 living this genteel  type of life. She was married at 27 and together they had four children, Isaac died at age 42 when my second Great Grandfather, also Isaac was three years old.

Elizabeth married a second time to Peter Olivant the owner of a family Carpentry and Joiner business in the town of Lazonby, Cumberland, England.  He could have been her late husbands employer as Isaac was also a Carpenter.  Lazonby was close to the ancient Royal Geltsdale Forest.

Elizabeth was born a few miles from Lazonby in the village of Castle Carrock, in the beautiful Eden Valley.  Generations of Hodgson's lived at tottergill farm...

Tottergill at present is a collection of luxury holiday cottages.

Elizabeth died seven years before Peter, the 1861 Census lists two of her children  as being his servants instead of his step children , although he claims Elizabeth's daughter Margaret's illegitimate child as his grandson.  I was able to take Elizabeth's line back to 1680 in Castle Carrock in spite of the confusion that Hodgson's marrying Hodgson's added to the difficulty.

Charming photo of the old school house in Lazonby where Elizabeth and Isaac's  children probably attended school. Now a wooden toy factory with the addition of the phone booth.
